In summer 2008, the game development company Related Designs contacted us to take part in the development of their blockbuster real time strategy game “Anno 1404”: in the final phase of development we were tasked with creating 3d models of medieval buildings for the game environment.

The buildings were optimized for best performance regarding their polygon count and the UV layout was created as space-saving as possible, to make the most out of the available texture space and give the building the highly detailed look that the Anno series is famous for.
An additional terrain decal texture was created for each building to allow for seamless integration with the ground textures.
To be able to achieve a high level of detail for the buildings, many building parts were created as a high polygon mesh. These high poly sources were then projected into the normal bump map of the low polygon version.
The game is one of the most successful RTS titles, with more than 100,000 units sold in Germany during the first 10 days after release.
